Your new mantra: #SorryNotSorry

Your apologies are no good here!

There are few things more important to succeeding in business than mastering the way that you communicate.

I want to address the “I’m sorry” epidemic that is at the forefront of how too many of us interact in and out of the office.

Do you apologize when someone bumps into you?

Do you apologize when responding to an email a few hours later, or before asking a question?

I get it, I’ve been there. I only realized how frequently I was apologizing after literally counting each and every time I said “I’m sorry” when it wasn’t warranted over the course of a day.

53 f’ing times! Was I really sorry for all those things I said “sorry” for? No!

#sorrynotsorry, it’s time to stop apologizing all the damn time when we haven’t done anything that merits it.

You’ve gotta hone in on your verbal communication, and think about what you’re projecting to those around you about who you are and where you want to be when you’re talking to people face-to-face. Whatever the core reason, saying sorry all the time makes you seem self-conscious. I promise you can get to the point clearly, quickly, confidently, and respectfully, without using a filler "sorry."

Try this instead:

  • Late for a meeting? Say “Thank you so much for your patience, I know your time is valuable so let’s dive right in.”

  • Asking a question? Say “Here’s my question” (no “I’m sorry, can I ask a question?”)

Your voice is not something to be ashamed of, it’s one of your biggest assets.

How many times do you find yourself apologizing throughout the day?

Let’s vow to only apologize when we actually do something wrong.

Confidence is like a muscle. The more you work it, the stronger it gets.

For now, our Money Minute is up! Until next time, don’t do anything with your money that I wouldn’t do!

xo,
